Frigid weather still has a grip on KC -- but warmer weather is on the way. Here’s when
Warmer temperatures will filter into the Kansas City area on Wednesday, but the National Weather Service said the metro will remain cold.
“Good news: It is exactly 30 degrees warmer in KC at 5 AM than it was yesterday at 5 AM!!” the weather service said in a post on Facebook. Temperatures were -8 degrees on Tuesday and 22 on Wednesday.
“Bad News: It’s still cold! Wind Chills in the single digits. STILL!” the post continued.
After setting a daily record of lowest temperatures for Jan. 21, the region will see temperatures rise into the low to mid-30s on Wednesday.
The metro will see temperatures around 34 degrees, slightly below the 38 degrees typical for this time of year in Kansas City. Overnight temperatures are expected to fall to around 19 degrees.
Light snow is possible in the afternoon and evening along and north of the U.S. 36 highway in northern Missouri. The weather service said the snow is not expected to reach the Kansas City metro.
Warmer days ahead in KC’s forecast
The coldest period in Kansas City’s winter is typically Jan. 10-23, when the average high is 38 degrees, and the overnight low is 19 degrees, the weather service said last week on X, formerly Twitter. But that doesn’t mean the winter’s cold is behind us this season.
In February 2021, Kansas City experienced record cold, with temperatures never climbing above 15 degrees for 10 days.
Temperatures on Thursday will be in the mid-20s, dropping to below 10 degrees overnight.
Weekend, Chiefs-Bills weather forecast at Arrowhead
Warmer weather is expected for the weekend. Temperatures will return closer to normal on Friday, climbing to 37 degrees in the afternoon. Overnight, temperatures will dip into the mid-20s.
On Saturday, temperatures will reach 40 degrees, falling to the low 20s overnight. The high temperature on Sunday will be in the mid-30s.
For fans headed to the AFC Championship football game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Buffalo Bills at Arrowhead Stadium, temperatures will be in the mid-30s in the afternoon for tailgating and around 32 degrees by the 5:30 p.m. kick-off. Wind chills will be in the upper 20s.
Temperatures will be warmer next week, reaching the low 40s Monday and near 50 Tuesday.
