Arctic blast to bring KC its coldest temperatures of the season. How cold will it be?
Enjoy the next few days as temperatures climb into the 40s and maybe into the 50s in some spots, because another arctic blast is coming and it’s expected to bring the Kansas City area its coldest weather of the season, according to the National Weather Service.
Wednesday got off to a chilly start, with the temperature at 14 degrees at about 6 a.m. at Kansas City International Airport. The wind chill plunged to 5 degrees.
“Temperatures will remain below freezing for most of the region today,” the weather service said on Facebook. Some areas in the far southern reaches of the Kansas City forecast area could see the upper 30s.
In the metro, temperatures are expected to climb to 31 degrees, which is below the average of 38 degrees typical for this time of year in Kansas City.
Warmer weather will move into the area, with temperatures in the metro rising to 38 degrees on Thursday and 42 degrees on Friday. Some areas south of the U.S. 50 highway could see temperatures climb into the 50s.
“Enjoy it though, as it comes crashing down for the weekend,” the weather service said.
Forecast for the Chiefs-Texans playoff game
A cold front will move through the area Friday night, bringing much colder weather by the weekend.
A weather system will bring moisture to the Mississippi Valley just ahead of the cold front, but the Kansas City metro and northwest Missouri have a near-zero chance for precipitation, the weather service said. The southern and eastern fringes of the Kansas City forecast area could see some precipitation.
“All precipitation would fall as rain, limiting any impacts,” the weather service said.
Temperatures will be at their warmest shortly after midnight early Saturday. They are expected to tumble throughout the day, falling to the mid-20s by the afternoon.
Fans heading to the AFC divisional playoff game between the Houston Texans and the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium on Saturday will need to dress warm. At the 3:30 p.m. kickoff, temperatures are expected to be around 24 degrees with a wind chill of 12 degrees.
Arctic air to bring extreme cold to Kansas City
The cold front will usher in a blast of even colder arctic air, bringing Kansas City its coldest temperatures of the season on Sunday through Tuesday.
Daytime temperatures will climb to nearly 15 degrees on Sunday, and overnight temperatures will fall below -1. On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, temperatures will be near 14 degrees, falling to -3 degrees overnight. Temperatures on Tuesday will be in the upper teens.
The weather service said wind chills on Monday and Tuesday night could be as low as 15 degrees below zero.
Below-average temperatures and above-normal precipitation are possible for Jan. 22-28.
