The Kansas City International Airport is back open for flight operations Saturday after icy conditions led to treacherous travel across the metro area.

The airport announced on social media Saturday afternoon that it had suspended travel. Shortly before 5:30 p.m., the airport reopened its runways and taxiways, Mayor Quinton Lucas announced on social media.

“Due to rapid ice accumulation, the airfield at Kansas City International Airport (MCI) is currently closed to flight operations,” the airport previously said on X.

The flight delays impact included the Kansas City Chiefs, whose flight to Denver for Sunday’s game against the Broncos was delayed.

Kansas City City Manager Brian Platt previously posted on X saying the runways were expected to reopen to normal operations Saturday evening.

The airport said travelers should check their respective airlines for specific flight information.
