Chilly weather arrives to start week in Kansas City. Here’s when a freeze is possible.
After a hot start to the fall, there’s finally a chill in the air in Kansas City.
Overnight temperatures dipped into the upper 30s at Kansas City International Airport Monday morning, according to the National Weather Service.
Afternoon temperatures on Monday are only expected to reach 61 degrees in the metro. Typically, Kansas City’s temperatures are around 68 degrees this time of year.
“Expect temperatures to continue to drop through midweek leading to a few chilly mornings,” the weather service said.
Morning temperatures are expected to be in the 30s and 40s. The coldest morning is forecast for Wednesday, when temperatures will likely fall into the upper 20s to low 30s.
As a result, a freeze watch is in effect for the Kansas City area late Tuesday into Wednesday morning.
“Frost and freeze conditions could kill crops, other sensitive vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor plumbing,” the weather service said.
The cooler weather comes after a warm first half of October, when daytime temperatures averaged around 81 degrees, about 10 degrees above normal.
Weather returns to normal in Kansas City
After dipping into the upper 50s on Tuesday, temperatures will begin gradually warm headed into the weekend.
Some areas in northeast Missouri may still get close to freezing temperatures Thursday morning, the weather service said.
Temperatures will be in the low 60s on Wednesday, the upper 60s on Thursday and the low 70s on Friday. The skies will also be clear and sunny.
Drought conditions are expected to worsen as the weather will likely continue to be dry past the weekend. The last time Kansas City had measurable rainfall was on Sept. 24, when .17 of an inch of rain fell.
