Are more thunderstorms and heavy downpours in the Kansas City forecast? What to know
A change in weather is coming to the Kansas City area, but temperatures will remain uncomfortable for the next couple of days, according to the National Weather Service.
“While not as hot, above normal temperatures are expected to continue through tomorrow (Thursday) afternoon,” the weather service said in its forecast discussion.
The weather will not be as scorching hot as it was on Monday and Tuesday, especially for areas that received more than two inches of rain from thunderstorms and downpours that pushed through overnight.
The weather service said temperatures will reach the lower 90s on Wednesday and Thursday and heat index values will climb between 95 to 102 degrees.
Typically, Kansas City sees temperatures in the mid-80s this time of year.
Storms forecast for later this week
A cold front is expected to move through the Kansas City area on Thursday night, bringing the chance for widespread showers and thunderstorms across northern Missouri and northeastern Kansas.
“Strong to marginally severe storms will be possible tomorrow evening/night,” the weather service said. Gusty winds will be the main threat.
The cold front is expected to enter northwest Missouri between 7 and 10 p.m., with showers and thunderstorms forming ahead of the front. The storms are expected to slowly sweep southeast through the region late Thursday and early Friday.
The weather service said storm activity should wane by Friday morning, but a few showers and storms could linger into the early afternoon.
Cooler and drier air filters in for Labor Day weekend
After the cold front moves through, cooler and drier air will move in, leading to a pleasant Labor Day holiday weekend.
Temperatures on Friday will reach the lower 80s for most areas.
The cooler weather will continue through the weekend, with temperatures in the upper 70s to mid-80s on Saturday and Sunday.
Another cold front is expected to move through the region early next week, bringing a “reinforcing shot of cooler and drier air” with “quite pleasant conditions” for the Labor Day holiday and Tuesday.
