Although relief is in sight, hot and humid weather will make for uncomfortable conditions across the Kansas City area on Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.

“One more dangerously hot day is expected today (Tuesday) with highs in the low to mid-90s and heat index values between 100 to 110 degrees,” the weather service said on X, formerly Twitter.

The temperature in Kansas City is expected to reach 95 degrees by the afternoon. At 8 a.m., the temperature had already reached 79 degrees with a heat index value of 82 degrees at Kansas City International Airport.

Typically, Kansas City sees temperatures in the mid-80s this time of year.

The heat advisory remains in effect through 8 p.m. east of the immediate Kansas City area for portions of central, north-central, and northeastern Missouri.

With Monday being so hot, the weather service asked people to post pictures of their dogs staying cool for National Dog Day.

Showers, thunderstorms forecast for KC area

Scattered, strong thunderstorms are possible Tuesday evening and night across most of north and central Missouri, including the Kansas City area.

The weather service said the storms’ main threats would be gusty winds of 50 mph, small hail and brief heavy downpours.

The weather service’s Storm Prediction Center has included most of the Kansas City forecast area within a marginal risk for severe storms, but the threat of severe weather should be tempered.

“However, we could see some small hail and microbursts,” the weather service said in its forecast discussion.

Relief from heat coming

Hot weather is expected to linger in the Kansas City area on Wednesday and Thursday, although it will not be as dangerous as at the beginning of the week.

Temperatures will hover in the low 90s on Wednesday and Thursday, which is still above average for this time of year. Heat index values are expected to remain below 100 degrees.

A cold front is expected to move in Thursday night into Friday morning, bringing more chances for showers and thunderstorms. Cooler weather is expected after the cold front passes.

For the Labor Day weekend, temperatures are expected to be in the low to mid-80s on Friday, Saturday and Sunday and the upper 70s on the holiday. Sunny weather is expected on all days.
