Kansas City to see dangerous heat return. Could this be metro’s first 100 degree day?
Hope you enjoyed the break from Kansas City’s summer heat because a warm-up is on the way that could bring dangerously hot weather to the metro, according to the National Weather Service.
After a stretch of unseasonably cool weather, temperatures in Kansas City are expected to climb into the lower 90s on Wednesday. Typically, the metro sees temperatures of 89 degrees this time of year.
The hotter temperatures will end a string of days where temperatures were well below average. The average high temperature for the month so far has been 84.7 degrees, more than three degrees cooler than 88.1 degrees, which is considered normal for that period.
While there is a low chance of an isolated shower or thunderstorms, most areas should remain dry.
Hotter days looming
Dry weather and above-normal temperatures will dominate the forecast, the weather service said.
Temperatures are expected to be in the lower 90s on Thursday and Friday. It will be a few degrees cooler on Saturday.
“As we get into the weekend temps will move above normal and we are watching for the potential for dangerous heat as we move into next week,” the weather service said on X, formerly known as Twitter.
There is a possibility of rain Saturday night into Sunday as a low-pressure system develops southwest and moves northwest through the Kansas City region.
“While this will bring increased rain chances on Sunday, it looks to have minimal impact on our already warm temperatures with near 90 expected for another day,” the weather service said.
Scorching temps next week
Dry weather and well-above-normal temperatures are expected next week. Temperatures will be in the mid- to upper 90s for much of next week.
The Kansas City area is expected to see temperatures close to 100 degrees by Tuesday. The Kansas City area has not seen temperatures climb to 100 degrees this year.
The last time Kansas City had temperatures at or above 100 degrees was on Aug. 25, 2023, when temperatures reached 103 degrees.
Heat index values are expected to climb above 100 degrees beginning Monday. There’s a good chance they will exceed 105 degrees starting Tuesday, according to the weather service.
The excessive heat is expected to continue into early August.
