Evergy has reported thousands of power outages so far as a winter storm coupling snow and strong winds continues to impact the Kansas City metro area Tuesday.

The utility company has reported more than 21,000 customers affected by outages across the Kansas City metro as of about 10:30 a.m. Tuesday.

There were more than 3,800 customers impacted by outages in Kansas City, and more than 4,700 customers affected in and around Raytown as of Tuesday morning.

More than 1,500 customers were affected by outages around Sugar Creek and Independence.

In Johnson County, outages affected more than 5,000 customers as of Tuesday morning, particularly in Mission and Overland Park, according to Evergy’s outage map.

Because of the continued storms, Evergy said customers should expect delayed restoration times in these areas.

The company said high winds with speeds higher than 50 mph have been the main cause of outages overnight and into Tuesday morning. Since the storm began, crews have restored power to more than 85,000 customers as of Wednesday morning.

Evergy said crews from other areas of Missouri and Nebraska are in the field working to restore power, but the storm is causing poor conditions and low visibility, slowing restoration efforts, according to a statement from Evergy.

Evergy said it have an estimate for when power will be fully restored because the storm continues to move through the area. Crews are assessing damage as they work on restoration efforts.

Repairs are prioritized to get power to the most customers at a time, Evergy said. Main lines that need repairs will be worked on first to restore power to neighborhoods.
