Kansas City sees second coldest Halloween on record. When will it warm up?
The Kansas City area woke up to the chilliest temperatures of the season Wednesday after seeing its second coldest Halloween on record, according to weather data.
Temperatures dropped to 20 degrees on Tuesday, just a few degrees shy of setting a new record, according to data from NOAA Regional Climate Centers.
The coldest Halloween on record was in 1993, when temperatures fell to 17 degrees. Normally, the lowest temperature on Halloween in Kansas City is 40 degrees, according to the data.
Temperatures continued to tumble overnight, falling to 18 degrees at Kansas City International Airport (MCI) and breaking the previous daily record low temperature of 20 degrees set in 1991. It felt much colder as wind chills dropped into the lower teens.
But the cold won’t be around long, according to the National Weather Service in Kansas City.
“Record low temperatures this morning will rebound into the mid- to upper 40s this afternoon,” the weather service said on X, formerly known as Twitter. “The warming trend continues as highs should return to the 50s tomorrow (Thursday) and the 60s by Friday. Dry conditions persist through the weekend.”
Above normal temperatures are expected this weekend, with temps in the mid-60s on Saturday and just shy of 70 degrees on Sunday. Typically this time of year in Kansas City, temperatures are around 60 degrees during the day and in the upper 30s at night.
A cold front is expected to move through the area on Monday or Tuesday, ending the run of warm weather, the weather service said in its forecast discussion.
There is a chance of rain overnight Sunday into Monday, but the forecast will likely change as the week progresses.
