A pleasant and sunny fall day is expected in the Kansas City metro Tuesday as the region prepares for the return of a more active weather pattern that is likely to bring rounds of showers and thunderstorms, according to the National Weather Service.

Temperatures will be slightly warmer on Tuesday with most areas climbing to the low to mid-70s, which is a few degrees above normal for this time of year in Kansas City.

The first round of scattered showers and thunderstorms is expected to move into the area Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. Most of the storm activity will be concentrated north of Interstate 70, the weather service said. The Kansas City metro area faces a 40% chance of rain.

Some of the stronger storms might produce small hail, gusty winds and heavy downpours. No severe weather is expected, the weather service said.

Dry and warm conditions are expected on Wednesday. Temperatures in the low 80s are expected under mostly sunny skies.

More storms are possible in the afternoon and night across far northwestern Missouri. A few strong to isolated severe storms are possible across northern Missouri and northeastern Kansas, the weather service said in its forecast discussion.

The threat of severe weather, however, is dependent on how far north the warm front moves. There is a chance it could move into southern Iowa, the weather service said.

There is a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms in the Kansas City area Wednesday night.

Mostly sunny skies are expected on Thursday, with temperatures climbing into the upper 70s. There is a chance for showers to return after 1 p.m. Most locations should see rain by the evening, the weather service said.

Rain is likely by the 7:15 p.m. start of the Kansas City Chiefs football game against the Denver Broncos at Arrowhead Stadium.

A few strong to severe storms are possible across far eastern Kansas and far western Missouri, the weather service said.

The timing of the storms is dependent on how fast the system moves across the region. If it moves slower than expected, storms might arrive overnight, lowering the risk for strong to severe storms, the weather service said.

Cooler conditions are expected on Friday, with temperatures in the low 60s. Cool and dry conditions will continue into the weekend with temperatures in the mid- to upper 50s on Saturday and Sunday.
