Chilly weather likely across Kansas City area. How cold will the metro get this weekend?
A cold front that is expected to push through the Kansas City area will usher in much colder weather this weekend with frost expected across much of eastern Kansas and western Missouri, according to the National Weather Service.
A few sprinkles and rain showers will be possible ahead of the front as it sweeps through the area Friday morning, the weather service said. Not everyone will see the rain as it will be fairly scattered across the area.
Conditions will be much cooler, with afternoon temperatures in the upper 50s to lower 60s. That’s a far change from the near record temperatures of 90 degrees observed at Kansas City International Airport on Monday.
The day will also be quite blustery, with gusty northwest winds of 30 to 40 mph expected. The area is at an elevated fire risk, which could cause fires to quickly grow out of control due to weather conditions, the weather service said.
For those headed outdoors for sporting events and other activities, here’s what they can expect: Temperatures will be in the upper 50s under clear skies at 6 p.m. Winds will be 10 to 15 mph, gusting to 20 to 25 mph, according to the weather service.
Temperatures will cool through the evening, dropping to around 50 degrees by 10 p.m. Skies will remain clear and winds will calm to 5 to 10 mph, with gusts of 10 to 15 mph.
Conditions will continue to chill over night, leading to the possibility of frost across much of eastern Kansas and western Missouri.
A frost advisory has been issued for the Kansas City region that is in effect from 3 a.m. to 9 a.m. Saturday.
Temperatures are expected to plunge as low as 35 degrees, which could result in frost. The immediate Kansas City area is expected to see temperatures dip to around 40 degrees.
Confidence is fairly high for frost across areas west of Interstate 35 and Interstate 49, the weather service said.
“Frost is expected to be a bit more patchy across the urban KC metro counties; however, large open areas and low lying areas may see a greater coverage of frost,” the weather service said.
Because the frost could kill sensitive outdoor plants that are left uncovered, the weather service recommended that people take steps to protect them from the cold.
Chilly conditions will continue through the weekend, with temperatures climbing to around 60 on Saturday and the mid-70s on Sunday.
Although temperatures are expected to remain around 40 degrees overnight Saturday, there’s a chance that clear skies and nighttime cooling could send temps lower, leading to another potential frosty night, the weather service said.
Temperatures are expected to rebound next week.
