Chances for off-and-on showers and thunderstorms are expected to continue for most of Wednesday across the Kansas City area, according to the National Weather Service.

Areas roughly along and south of a line stretching from St. Joseph to Kirksville face the possibility rain on Wednesday. In the immediate Kansas City area, there’s a 27% chance of rain.

Meanwhile, areas to the south and east of the metro have a higher chance of rain — 58% in Butler, 44% in Sedalia and 70% in Rolla, according to the weather service.

Severe weather is not expected from the storms that develop, although a few strong thunderstorms will be possible in the afternoon and evening south of Interstate 70, the weather service said in its forecast discussion.

Unseasonably warm conditions are expected to continue, with temperatures reaching around 80 degrees on Wednesday and upper 70s on Thursday. Typically, temperatures are around 70 degrees this time of year in Kansas City.

Conditions will be 10 to 20 degrees cooler on Friday and Saturday, with temperatures reaching the upper 50s. Morning temperatures will dip into the upper 30s and low 40s on Saturday and Sunday in the Kansas City area.

Some of the river valleys and other low-lying areas north of the Kansas City metro could see their first frost of the season as temperatures might dip below freezing.

“So folks with sensitive vegetation may need to start planning to take measures to protect that vegetation,” the weather service said.

Temperatures are expected to warm to the upper 60s on Sunday and return to normal by the start of the work week. Above normal temperatures are expected by mid-week.
