Rain showers and scattered thunderstorms are expected to return to the Kansas City area this weekend, according to the National Weather Service.

Sunny skies will become increasingly cloudy as a cold front is expected to push its way into the Kansas City area late Friday afternoon. Temperatures will be in the low to mid-80s, which is near normal for this time of year in the metro.

Mainly quiet weather is expected in the evening, however, there is a chance for a few showers and isolated thunderstorms after 4 p.m. in northwest Missouri, the weather service said.

Lightning chances will be limited, however a few strikes could be possible in Doniphan County in Kansas and Atchison , Nodaway, Holt and Andrew counties in Missouri. Lightning is not expected to be a threat outside of those counties, the weather service said.

Light showers and isolated thunderstorms are possible overnight into Saturday morning as the cold front continues to sag south through the area.

Conditions will be slightly cooler on Saturday, with temperatures in the upper 70s. Additional scattered thunderstorms are possible in the afternoon. Widespread severe weather is unlikely, although a few storms could be strong, the weather service said.
