Brief break from summer heat to end. Here’s when, how hot it will get in Kansas City
The break from the summer heat is about to come to an end in the Kansas City area, according to the National Weather Service.
An unusually cool August is going to heat up the next few days with the metro area making another run at it’s first 100-degree-day this year, the weather service said.
“It’s going to be hot and humid this weekend into early next week, the trend is there for multiple days of above normal temperatures, with the hottest temps across eastern Kansas into far western Missouri, basically riding up the I-35 corridor into the KC Metro,” the weather service said in its forecast discussion.
“More concerning is heat index values, we could see multiple days, beginning Saturday and continuing through Monday, possibly Tuesday, of heat index values 100 to 105.”
Temperatures are expected to be 97 degrees on Saturday and around 99 degrees on Sunday.
That’s a 20-degree swing from the start of the week which saw temperatures in the in the upper 70s, which is 10 degrees cooler than what is normal for this time of year. Overnight temperatures have been pleasant this week as well.
“Well, it’s taken 36 days but we have finally as of 4AM dropped into the 50s in Kansas City for the first time since July 10th,” the weather service said Wednesday on X, formerly known as Twitter. “Enjoy!”
The last time it was 100 degrees or hotter in Kansas City was on Aug. 6, 2022, when temperatures reached the century mark, according to data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Regional Climate Centers. The hottest it’s been this year was 99 degrees on July 28.
Despite the stifling heat and humidity, July was one of the cooler Julys on record in Kansas City since 1888. The mean average temperature for the month was 77.3 degrees, which was the 99th hottest July on record and the 35th coolest. The normal mean average temperature for the month is 78.2 degrees.
So far this month, conditions have been cooler as well. The mean average temperature for the month is 76.9 degrees, which is below the normal of 77.9 degrees. The average maximum temperature is 85.1 degrees, compared to the normal of 88.3 degrees. The average minimum temperature for the month is 68.7 degrees, compared to the normal of 67.6 degrees.
Typically, the hottest period of the year for Kansas City is from July 16 through Aug. 7th. The normal high temperature during that time is 89 degrees and the normal low low is 68 degrees, the weather service said on X earlier this month.
