Severe weather could hit the Kansas City metro area Sunday afternoon following a round of mornings storms.

This afternoon and evening, storms could be severe, causing damaging winds, large hail, flash flooding after storms in the morning caused heavy rainfall and gusty winds, according to the National Weather Service.

Storms are expected to hit the metro area between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m., with a slight risk that they will be severe. Winds could reach 60 to 70 mph, and there may be up to quarter-sized hail.

Isolated threats of a tornado are expected to impact areas further south of Interstate 70, closer to the Ozarks.

With heavy rainfall hitting the metro area recently, meteorologists warned of an increased possibility for flooding.

Flooding from morning storms closed some roadways in the metro, according to KC Scout.

Three left lanes of southbound Interstate 35 past 20th Street have closed due to flooding. On the northbound side of I-35 past West Pennway Street, two left lanes closed because of a stalled tractor trailer.

Drivers should stay weather-aware and turn around if they see flooding in any roadways.
