Storm heading to Kansas City metro includes high wind speeds, reports of tree damage

Update: The National Weather Service extended the severe thunderstorm warning through 9:15 p.m. for the Kansas City metro.

Severe thunderstorms warnings have been issued across the Kansas City metro Sunday as storms with winds up to 70 miles per hour move through the area.

A severe thunderstorm warning was issued just before 8 p.m. for Kansas City, Jackson County, Kansas City, Kansas, Overland Park, Clay County and Platte County until 8:45 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.

“A complex of severe thunderstorms is moving south along I-29 from St Joseph into the KC metro,” the weather service posted on social media Sunday evening. “There have been multiple observed wind gusts between 65-70 MPH and several reports of tree damage.”

Pea-sized hail is also possible, according to the weather service.

As of 7:45 p.m. Sunday, a severe thunderstorm warning remained in place as far north as St. Joseph and as far south as Liberty until 8 p.m. in Missouri, according to the weather service. In Kansas, a severe thunderstorm warning remained in place for parts of Wyandotte, Doniphan, Leavenworth and Atchison counties until 8 p.m.
