Check your weekend plans Kansas City, because some looming storms could influence which days you want to be outside.

Showers and thunderstorms will be possible Saturday in the Kansas City area, with some of the these storms being strong to severe, according to the National Weather Service in Kansas City.

The primary threat from the stronger storms will be wind gusts in excess of 60 mph and large hail of one inch in diameter or greater. There is also a low, conditional threat of a tornado, the weather service said.

Morning and early afternoon showers are expected Saturday, along with the possibility of isolated thunderstorms. The threat of severe weather is low with this initial activity, the weather service said.

More storm activity is expected in the afternoon and evening. It is with this round of storms that severe weather will be possible.

“This system may shift its track over the next 3 day,” the weather service said.

Leading into the weekend, temperatures will remain near 90 degrees. Humidity, however, will be increasing over the next few days, allowing heat index values to approach 100 degrees on Saturday afternoon. With the higher heat index values, heat illness concerns will be elevated, the weather service said.

Temperatures on Monday will return to just a few degrees above normal, which is the mid-80s this time of year in Kansas City. The cooler weather will be short lived as Kansas City could see it’s first heat wave of the season begin about mid- to late next week.

With excessive heat possible, the weather service advises people to stay up to date with daily forecasts over the next couple of weeks to be aware of forecast high temperatures and associated heat index values.
