Hot temperatures expected this week in Kansas City. When is next chance for notable rain?

Kansas City for the most part has escaped the heat so far this year, according to the National Weather Service. That will change this week as the first days of summer bring much warmer temperatures. Heat index values will be in the mid- to upper 90s in the afternoons.

Dry and above normal conditions are expected this week in the Kansas City area with heat index values expected to climb into the mid- to upper 90s during the afternoons, according to the National Weather Service.

“This week will feature some of the warmest temperatures we have had thus far,” the weather service said on Twitter.

Some might argue that the hotter temperatures are arriving right on time — the first day of summer is Wednesday.

Temperatures are expected to hover around 90 degrees for the remainder of the week and into the weekend, according to the weather service. That will be slightly hotter than normal as temperatures this time of year typically are in the mid-80s.

Overnight temperatures are expected to drop into the upper 60s to lower 70s, which will provide some relief from the heat.

“With the increasing heat and humidity, heat index values are expected to climb approaching the century mark Saturday afternoon,” the weather service said in its forecast discussion.

Mostly dry conditions are expected this week. The next best chance of showers will be Saturday, where the chance for rain and thunderstorms is 30% during the day and 40% during the night.

Any rain would be welcome as much of the Kansas City forecast area is facing abnormally dry or worse drought conditions.

Temperatures are expected to be in the mid-90s on Sunday.

The Kansas City area for the most part has escaped the heat so far this year. As of Monday, there have only been two days where temperatures have reached 90 degrees, the weather service said.

“Normally, KC has 5 days of 90+ degrees through 6/19,” the weather service said on Twitter. “In 1934, we had already had 20 days above 90 degrees by this date (and 3 above 100).”
