Another round of severe weather will be possible this week as thunderstorms rumble through the Kansas City metro area, according to the National Weather Service.

Showers and thunderstorms are expected to arrive Wednesday evening and continue into Thursday morning, the weather service said. Some of these storms have the potential to be strong to severe, with large hail and damaging winds the primary threats.

The National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center has placed Kansas City under the marginal risk category, which means isolated severe thunderstorms are possible.

Areas to the west and north of Kansas City are at a greater risk of seeing the severe weather. The Storm Prediction Center has placed central and northeast Kansas and northwest Missouri, including areas just outside the immediate Kansas City metro, under the slight risk category — scattered severe storms are likely with some isolated intense storms possible.

To start the week, the Kansas City area got off to a chilly start with temperatures falling to just a few degrees above freezing at Kansas City International Airport early Monday. The weather service placed some areas in far northwestern Missouri under a freeze warning.

Conditions are expected to bounce back, however, with temps climbing to near 70 degrees. There is also expected to be a lot of sunshine in the afternoon, according to the weather service.

A warming trend is expected to continue into Tuesday and Wednesday with temps rising to around 80 degrees each day. Normally, Kansas City is in the mid-60s this time of year.

It will be cooler Thursday as near normal conditions return. There’s also a chance for showers on Friday, with temps near 60 degrees.

The weekend is looking mostly sunny, although it will be chilly with temperatures in the 50s.
