Strong to severe thunderstorms are possible in Kansas City area; snow also could fall
A stormy weekend is looming for the Kansas City area which could see rounds of strong to severe thunderstorms and maybe even some snow mixing in, according to the National Weather Service.
Conditions will be well above normal again Friday, with temperatures rising to the low 80s, the weather service said. Typically, 65-degree weather is normal for this time of year in Kansas City. It will also be breezy, with winds gusts as high as 30 mph, the weather service said.
Scattered thunderstorms are likely to move in from the west after midnight. A few of the storms could be strong to severe, with large hail and damaging winds being the primary threat, the weather service said. Areas to the west of the metro are at a greater risk of seeing the severe weather.
Strong to severe storms are possible again Saturday afternoon. The primary threat from these storms also are large hail and gusty winds. Areas east of the metro are at the greater risk of severe thunderstorms.
Colder air is expected to move into the area behind the storms, sending temperatures tumbling into the mid-30s overnight Saturday. Snow could mix in with rain as the temperatures drop. Surface temperatures, however, are expected to be too warm for snow to accumulate, the weather service said in its forecast discussion.
Conditions will be considerably colder Sunday, with temperatures climbing only into the low 50s. There’s also a chance for showers into the early afternoon.
Temperatures will rebound next week, returning to normal on Monday and then the mid- to upper 70s on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
