Thunderstorms and strong winds could hit Kansas City area overnight Sunday

Potentially severe thunderstorms and strong winds are possible starting Sunday night and lasting into the next day in Kansas City.

According to the National Weather Service, scattered showers could begin as early as 4 p.m. Sunday with the potential for thunderstorms between 9 p.m. Sunday and 3 a.m. Monday. Periods of showers will continue throughout the morning.

Precipitation and strong winds are expected in areas south of Interstate 70, including Kansas City, Lawrence and Olathe.

Damaging winds are expected to be most hazardous between 10 p.m. Sunday and 4 a.m. Monday. However, non-thunderstorm gusts could still be as strong as 50 mph through Monday afternoon.

Rain totals could be between three-quarters and one inch across the metro, with minimal risk of flash flooding.
