Drivers urged to be careful as light rain, snow falls during Kansas City’s a.m. rush hour

Light snow was falling along Interstate 435 in Wyandotte County near the Missouri River during Thursday morning’s rush hour, a traffic camera from the Kansas City Scout system showed. Any snow that does fall, however, is not expected to amount to much, according to the National Weather Service in Kansas City. The snow is expected to switch back over to rain before exiting by midday.

Drivers headed to work and morning activities were urged to be careful as a light rain had transitioned to snow during the Thursday’s rush hour in some parts of the Kansas City area.

What snow that does fall, however, is not expected to amount to much. It could turn roads and highways slick in some spots.

“Light rain and a little snow will move through this morning,” the National Weather Service in Kansas City said on social media. “But don’t get your hopes up too high . . . any accumulations will be minor and most will only see some flurries before the system moves out.”

At 6:20 a.m., the weather service was receiving reports sticking to the road and creating some trouble spots along Interstate 35 of Cameron, Missouri.

“If traveling across NW Missouri this morning be prepared for some slick spots on roadways,” the weather service said.

Any snow that is falling is expected to switch back to rain as conditions warm. The rain is expected to move out of the metro by midday, the weather service said.

Conditions are expected to be in the mid-30s in Kansas City, which is slightly cooler than the normal temperature of 43 degrees for this time of year. Conditions will be closer to normal on Friday and Saturday, where temperatures will climb to around 40 degrees.

Kansas City’s next chance of rain and possibly snow arrives Saturday afternoon and evening. Rain is expected to switch to a wintry mix of rain and snow as temperatures cool, eventually becoming all snow overnight into early Sunday.

The quick moving winter storm system is not expected to produce much snow. Any snow that does fall is not expected to hang around long, the weather service said.

There will be additional chances for precipitation next week. Temperatures will be in the 30s and 40s during the day and dipping to the 20s at night next week.
