Wintry mix of rain, freezing rain and snow in forecast. Here’s what it means to KC

A winter storm is expected to sweep through the area bringing the possibility of a mix of rain, freezing rain and snow across northeast Kansas and northwest Missouri later this week, according to the National Weather Service in Kansas City.

The Kansas City metro, however, will likely only see mostly rain — maybe a few snowflakes. The chance that Kansas City sees more than .1 of an inch of snow is 22%, according to the weather service’s snow amount potential charts.

While Tuesday will be a little cooler than Monday, where temperatures climbed to 56 degrees at Kansas City International Airport, conditions will still be near 50 degrees in the metro area. Temperatures typically are in the low 40s for this time of year in Kansas City.

It’s been a warm January in Kansas City, which has seen an average temperature of 45.6 degrees so far. That is 10 degrees warmer than the normal average of 34.6 degrees for the same period.

Rain is expected to move into the Kansas City region overnight into Wednesday morning. While Kansas City will likely see only rain, a wintry mix is possible for a few hours Wednesday morning across northwestern Missouri where conditions are expected to fall just below freezing. The precipitation will likely transition back to rain by late morning as conditions warm.

Rain will likely transition back to a rain and snow mix after 6 p.m. and changing to all snow after midnight along and north of U.S. 36 highway, which cuts across northern Missouri, according to the weather service. Light icing is possible. Snowfall totals are expected to be minor.

Mostly rain is expected south of U.S. 36, including the Kansas City metro. There might be a brief period of a wintry mix before it turns to all snow where temperatures are cool enough. Little to no accumulation is likely, the weather service said.

Slightly below normal temperatures are expected for the end of January, with near to slightly above normal precipitation likely.

While a wintry mix of rain, freezing rain and snow is possible across northeast Kansas and northwest Missouri Wednesday into Thursday, the Kansas City metro area will likely see only rain, according to the National Weather Service. A few flakes could fall, but the chance of metro seeing snowfall greater than .1 of an inch is 22%.
