Drivers should use caution during Wednesday morning’s rush hour as thunderstorms were sweeping through the Kansas City metro with strong gusty winds and downpours, the National Weather Service urged.
“Storms moving into the Metro this morning have been producing wind gusts to 40-45 MPH with heavy downpours reducing visibility,” the weather service said on Twitter. “Use caution if traveling early this morning!”
Rain showers and thunderstorms, a few that could be be strong, are expected through the morning, the weather service said. In addition to the strong wind gusts, some small hail could be possible.
Weather conditions are expected to clear out by the afternoon, remaining breezy with wind gusts up to 30 mph. Temperatures are expected to reach into the low 70s, which is slightly above the normal temperature of 69 degrees for this time of year in Kansas City, according to the weather service.
The windy weather is expected to continue Thursday and Friday, with gusts up to 35 mph. The gusty winds along with dry conditions will lead to an elevated risk of fire weather.
Temperatures are expected to be in the mid-60s on Thursday, around 70 on Friday and upper 60s on Saturday.
Dry conditions are expected to persist through the reminder of the week into the weekend and early next next week, the weather service said. Temperatures will trend cooler.
