It’s the first day of summer. In Kansas City, the heat index soars back above 100
Welcome to the official first day of summer Kansas City — it’s going to be a hot one.
The metro area will continue its streak of consecutive days with temperatures above 90 degrees as the calendar catches up with a heat wave that arrived early this year.
A heat advisory has been issued for Kansas City and surrounding areas as temperatures are expected to climb to near 100 degrees Tuesday, with the heat index soaring as high as 107 degrees, according to the National Weather Service in Kansas City. The advisory is in effect from noon to 8 p.m.
Because of the dangerous heat, people are urged to drink plenty of fluids and stay in air-conditioned rooms and out of the sun. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in cars, the weather service said.
There’s a chance for showers and thunderstorms developing in the evening, with a few isolated strong to severe storms possible.
The heat’s grip on the metro area could loosen a bit Wednesday as the temperatures are expected to remain below 90 degrees for the first time since June 11. Overnight temperatures haven’t provided much relief as they remained in the 70s to low 80s during that stretch. Conditions are expected to be in the upper 80s on Thursday as well.
The break will be short-lived, as very hot conditions will come bouncing back. Temperatures in the mid- to upper 90s are expected on Friday and Saturday with the heat index between 100 to 105 degrees.
The normal daytime temperature for this time of year in Kansas City is the mid-80s with overnight temperatures in the mid-60s.
