Overnight rainfall leads to ponding on Kansas City’s roads; more flooding possible
Heavy rainfall collected on roads in parts of the Kansas City area Tuesday morning as commuters headed back to work from the holiday weekend.
“Careful as you head out this morning,” the National Weather Service in Kansas City urged on Twitter. “Early morning rainfall has led to some ponding on roadways across the KC metro and along portions of I-70 in eastern KS and western MO.”
Two lanes of Interstate 35 headed into downtown Kansas City were temporarily closed early in the morning’s rush hour as water covered the highway, according to Kansas City Scout. Water also covered roads in parts of the metro are typically see flooding.
Because of the threat of additional rain, the weather service has issued a flood watch for Kansas City area. As much as three inches of rain are possible by Wednesday morning. Some areas could see higher amounts.
Runoff from the storms may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams and other low-lying and flood-prone areas, the weather service said.
Showers and storms are expected to continue through the morning before tapering off. No severe weather is expected from them.
A new round of thunderstorms, however, is expected during the afternoon and evening, mainly along and south of the Missouri River. Some severe weather could develop with damaging winds and large hail being the primary threat, the weather service said.
This round of storm could bring heavy rain to some areas, which could lead to flooding.
Drivers who encounter roads covered by water are urged to turn around and find an alternate route to avoid getting stuck in high water and possibly drowning.
