Gusty winds and low humidity will increase the chance of fires in and around Kansas City on Sunday.

The National Weather Service issued a “red flag warning” for the entire metro from noon to 8 p.m. Sunday, warning of “critical fire conditions.”

The relative humidity is expected to drop to about 20% Sunday afternoon, accompanied by wind gusts up to 35 miles per hour, according to the weather service. The temperature will likely reach into the upper 70s.

This fire risk spans much of eastern Kansas and Western Missouri, leaving experts urging people not to burn anything outdoors on Sunday, since any fires that do develop could quickly spread out of control.

The rest of the week is expected to be quite a bit cooler, with highs in the 50s and 60s, and wet.

Rain returns to the forecast Monday evening, and sticks around through the end of the day Wednesday, according to the weather service.
