Threat of winter storm dumping snow in Kansas City increasing as weekend approaches
Unseasonably warm temperatures the next couple days might have you dreaming about an early end to winter in Kansas City.
But a winter storm arriving Friday could dash those hopes as the threat of snow is growing, which could make traveling hazardous for the evening commute home Friday, according to the National Weather Service in Kansas City.
Areas north of Kansas City will likely see snowfall totals of 2 inches or more from the storm. The metro area, however, will likely have less and faces a 66% chance of at least an inch of snow, according to the weather service.
There is uncertainty with the track and timing of the storm, which could impact snow amounts.
As the system enters northern Missouri late Friday morning, light snow is possible for counties near the Iowa border. As it pushes further south, temperatures are expected to rise above freezing.
For areas south of St. Joseph, including the Kansas City area, rain is expected during the afternoon before switching over to snow between 5 p.m. and midnight as temperatures drop, according to the weather service’s forecast discussion.
Snow covered roads will be possible Friday night through Saturday, making travel hazardous.
