The unseasonable warm winter weather is coming to an end for Kansas City.

This weekend, much colder temperatures and possibly light snow are expected for the New Year, according to the National Weather Service in Kansas City.

A major change in the weather pattern is expected this weekend as temperatures are expected to be around 30 on Saturday and the low 20s on Sunday.

There’s a chance for rain and maybe a wintry or very light snow on Saturday.

This December has been one of the warmest on record for Kansas City, coming in third behind December 1889, with an average temperature of 46.8 degrees, and December 1965, with an average temperature of 43.9 degrees, according to data from National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Regional Climate Centers.

The average temperature for the month so far is 43.8 degrees, which is slight more than 10 degrees above the normal average temperature of 33.7 for the month through December 26 in Kansas City.

It’s also looking like this December will be only the seventh winter on record where Kansas City received no snow through Dec. 31, according to the weather service. It’s been a dry December this year, with only .19 of an inch of rain falling in Kansas City. Typically, Kansas City has received 1.36 inches of rain by this time in December.

Temperatures are expected to be cooler Monday, with a chance for rain moving into the region late Monday, according to the weather service. Temperatures are expected to be in the 40s to 50s. The normal temperature for this time of year in Kansas City is 40 degrees.

Rainfall amounts in the Kansas City metro area, however, are expected to be low, ranging from a trace to a few hundredths of an inch of rain. Central Missouri will likely see the greatest amounts of rain, with totals reaching up to a half an inch, according to the weather service’s forecast discussion.

Temperatures will return to low to mid-60s on Tuesday. Colder temperatures, however, move in to the area Tuesday night into Wednesday with temperatures reaching the mid-30s. Temperatures will be in the 40s on Thursday and around 50 degrees on New Year’s Eve.
