Pop-up storms likely near Kansas City with hot, humid August afternoon in forecast

Afternoon highs are expected to climb into the upper 80s, but it will feel more like the 90s as Kansas City is set for a typical hot and humid August afternoon, said FOX4 meteorologist Karli Ritter.

With a high of 87 degrees expected, the Kansas City area will see temperatures that are average for this time of year, said Ritter, who provides weather updates to The Star.

“It’s going to feel like a typical August afternoon with a lot of humidity,” Ritter said. “A few pop up storms are possible. We’re seeing that this morning already on radar in some spots, especially southwest and north of Kansas City.”

A few more thunderstorms may bubble up around 6 or 7 p.m. Thursday, some perhaps closer to the immediate Kansas City metro area, she said.

“But we have to really just focus more on the heat and the fact it’s going to feel like it’s in the low 90s today,” Ritter said. “We’ll have a similar set up for tomorrow before a cold front arrives over the weekend.”

The cold front will start to cool down the metro over the weekend, but a secondary one will bring some refreshing more fall-like conditions next week, she said.
