National Weather Service issues severe thunderstorm warning in KC area, warns of hail

A severe thunderstorm warning was issued Friday afternoon for parts of Jackson and Cass counties in Missouri and Johnson County in Kansas.

The warnings were issued just around 4:45 p.m. Friday according to the National Weather Service in Pleasant Hill. At 5:15 the warnings in Jackson and Johnson County expired as the Cass County warning was extended to 5:45.

The areas affected include northwestern Cass County, southwestern Jackson County and southeastern Johnson County.

The weather service reported that 60 mph winds and quarter sized hail was possible in the storms.

In a Twitter post, the weather service said it had received reports of 60 mph wind near Stanley in southern Johnson County and Peculiar in Cass County.

One to 2 inches of rain were expected in the area, the National Weather Service said on its Twitter account.

Residents in the area are asked to move indoors.
