Heat, severe thunderstorms likely to develop over Kansas City metro

Showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop over the Kansas City area Wednesday afternoon and evening, according to FOX4 meteorologist Karli Ritter.

“We will be watching very closely for the development of thunderstorms, some that could be on the strong to severe side, as early as 4 or 5 o’clock, but the greater chances of severe weather will actually exist later on this evening,” said Ritter, who provides weather updates to The Star.

Afternoon highs are expected to be around 90 degrees, she said.

The stormy weather and heat could have an impact on the Unity March scheduled for 6:30 p.m. in the front lawn of the Nelson Atkins Museum. The march will proceed to Mill Creek Park, near the Country Club Plaza where daily protests started Friday in the wake of the killing of George Floyd, a black man, during his arrest by a white police officer in Minneapolis on May 25.

Only a few isolated cells of strong to severe storms are expected with the first batch of storms that move through the metro later Wednesday afternoon.

“The greater chances for more widespread storms will happen actually overnight tonight,” Ritter said. “So while you’re sleeping, we may have some damaging winds or some larger hail as this complex of storms blow through.”

Most of the storm activity will be winding down by Thursday morning. Storms, however, may make a repeat performance over the Kansas City area Thursday.

It will then be a dry, hot weekend in Kansas City, Ritter said.
