Severe storms possible Thursday in Kansas City area. The main risks? Hail, gusty winds

The Kansas City area may experience some severe weather on Thursday as storms move through the region.

FOX4 meteorologist Joe Lauria says there will be a chance for storms in the morning and again in the late afternoon or evening.

“One will be first thing in the morning, although the better chances will probably be up to our north,” Lauria said in a weather update to The Star.

“Tomorrow afternoon, we should warm up well into the 70s. That’s going to set the stage for the atmosphere to get more unstable as the afternoon goes along, and as that cold front comes into that instability, that means it’s a good set up for thunderstorms.”

Temperatures are expected to reach a high of 78. Lauria estimates that the thunderstorms risks may be increasing between 4 and 9 p.m. Thursday from the north and west to the south and east.

The main threats from these storms are gusty winds and “maybe some quarter-sized hail or larger,” Lauria said.

“We’ll keep an eye on the flooding situation as well because some of these storms may produce some real heavy rains.”

There will be a chance for rain early in the morning, and then rain is likely in the evening.

Friday’s forecast calls for temperatures in the 70s with mostly dry conditions, Lauria continued.

Saturday will be around 75 with off and on rain.

Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday will be mostly sunny with warmer temperatures in the 70s.
