Person found dead after tree falls on Bates County home during Monday storms
One fatality was reported at a west-central Missouri home Monday morning after severe storms moved through the area.
Deputies in Bates County were called about 10:30 a.m. with a report of a tree falling on a home in rural Butler.
Sheriff’s deputies, firefighters from Butler and Amsterdam, and Bates County EMS responded to the scene.
Sutton Construction Co. of Butler responded with an excavator to assist in the rescue efforts. One person found at the home was pronounced dead, the sheriff’s office said in a statement.
The person’s name has not been released pending family notification.
“Our prayers go out to the family and friends of the deceased,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement posted on Facebook.
No further details have been released.
Lines of strong to severe storms blew through the Kansas City region Monday morning and early afternoon, leaving damage in their wake.
According to the National Weather Service in Pleasant Hill, large hail fell in several areas, including in Miami, Linn and Wyandotte counties in Kansas and Cass County in Missouri.
Large hail reportedly cracked a car windshield in Mound City, Kansas.

Strong winds also knocked down trees and power lines. At 206th Street and Kansas 32 highway, about two miles south of Linwood in Leavenworth County, Kansas, a barn was blown down.
A 36-inch diameter tree was blown over at 222nd Road and Linwood Road west of Linwood.
The winds snapped tree limbs that were one-inch thick and blew shingles off in Edwardsville, Kansas.
Near Edgerton, Kansas, winds reached 65 mph and blew over a semitractor-trailer and downed power poles.
As the storms moved across across the southern part of the metropolitan area, winds reached 80 mph at Johnson County Executive Airport in Olathe and 74 mph in Lee’s Summit.
In Garden City in Cass County, Missouri, strong winds blew down trees, blocking several roads, and two semitractor-trailors were blown over on Missouri 7 highway.
