Cold rain in Kansas City, snow in northern Missouri as storms move through region

The weather will take a brief detour away from spring later this week as storms are expected to bring cold rain to Kansas City and snow north of the metro, said FOX4 meteorologist Karli Ritter.

“Later on today we are going to have ample sunshine and we are going to see our highs climbing into the lower 50s,” said Ritter, who provides weather updates to The Star.

Highs on Wednesday are expected to climb into the lower 50s, which is about 10 degrees cooler than the typical high in the mid-60s for this time of year in Kansas City.

“Our forecast is going to take a little bit of a turn though as we head through the next 24 to 48 hours,” she said. “Rain chances return tomorrow (Thursday).”

Those living in St. Joseph and north of U.S. 36 will likely see more snow than rain falling Thursday morning, Ritter said.

“This could end up measuring maybe more than just a coating,” she said. “Throughout the day though, everybody should transition on Thursday to a cold rain.”

Overnight lows Wednesday are expected to fall into the middle 30s.

Snow will likely fall Thursday night and continue into the middle of Friday morning across northeast Kansas and northwest Missouri, Ritter said. Overnight lows in the Kansas City area are expected to dip near freezing.

“For us here in town, it looks like just a cold rain with a possibility of a little snow mixing in,” Ritter said. “By mid-morning at the latest on Friday, we are done and we start to clear out heading into the weekend.”

The metro also gets warmer headed into the weekend.

Although overnight lows on Friday are expected to once again dip near freezing, Saturday highs will warm into the 60s. Highs will return to the middle 60s Sunday. Next week will get off to a warmer start with highs Monday in the upper 60s and middle 70s on Tuesday.

How we did this story

The Star produced this weather update in partnership with the local FOX4 television station. The station’s meteorologists create forecast videos multiple times a day for the newspaper to include in its weather reports.

Accumulating snow possible in northern Missouri

The National Weather Service in Pleasant Hill said that between 1 and 3 inches of snow is expected to fall across northeast Kansas and northern Missouri, with lesser amounts further to the south.

“Just keep in mind that given the time of year, there is some uncertainty & forecast snowfall amounts may change,” the weather service said on Twitter.

The weather service also pointed out on Twitter that Kansas City hit 31 degrees at 7 a.m. Wednesday, making it the seventh day this month with below freezing temperatures. That makes this April tied for fourth for the most days below freezing low temperatures.
