Storms brewing as breezy, unseasonably warm weather blows into Kansas City metro

It will be breezy and unseasonably warm in the Kansas City metro Wednesday as storms are looming to bring a soggy end to the week, according to FOX4 meteorologist Karli Ritter.

“Later on today we are expecting temps to get really warm,” said Ritter, who provides weather updates to The Star. “We are actually going to see them soaring about 10 degrees above average up into the lower 70s.”

The wind will also be a big factor in the forecast as well Wednesday, said Ritter. Gusts of 20 to 30 mph are possible.

“As we head into tomorrow (Thursday), rain showers are possible in the morning but the better chance for more widespread rain arrives tomorrow night into Friday and Friday is going to be a soggy day all the way across the board.”

Temperatures are expected to cool as the day progresses Friday, with the highs in the 50s rather than the 70s expected Wednesday.

How we did this story

The Star produced this weather update in partnership with the local FOX4 television station. The station’s meteorologists create forecast videos multiple times a day for the newspaper to include in its weather reports.

Breezy with gusts up to 30 mph expected

The National Weather Service in Pleasant Hill said in its guidance for temporary outdoor structures that no hazardous weather is expected. However, breezy southerly winds are expected Wednesday and Thursday.

“Gusts up to 20 to 30 mph are possible today . . . increasing to 25 to 35 mph on Thursday,” the weather service said.

People who are using tents, including those used for medical purposes for the COVID-19 disease, should check to make sure they are set up and anchored according to manufacturer recommendations. Tents have a variety of wind ratings depending on design, materials used and how they were set up, the weather service said.

Also, tents offer “no protection from lightning and should be evacuated in advance of, during, and 30 minutes after thunderstorms,” the weather service said.
