Rain in forecast for Kansas City late Sunday to tamp down elevated fire risks

Kansas City’s next chance for rain comes late Sunday, after a couple of windy days and a period of elevated fire hazard, according to FOX4 meteorologist Garry Frank.

The forecast on Thursday came as wind gusts and drier conditions prompted a red flag warning across the region that discouraged burning because any fires could spread out of control quickly, according to the National Weather Service. The Shawnee Fire Department issued a temporary burn ban Thursday.

The danger will likely be reduced by rain late Sunday into early Monday, according to the forecast.

“I think most of it’s overnight, so Sunday is dry during the day, much warmer, but we’ll see some rain arrive overnight,” said Frank, who provides weather updates to The Star.

On Thursday, the high temperature is 59 degrees, with cooler temperatures on Friday topping out at 55.

Saturday is expected to be warmer, with a high of 65 degrees and on Sunday temperatures may reach 68.

The forecast calls for an 80 percent chance of rain late Sunday night into early Monday.
