Winter storm warning for KC: Prepare for snow, freezing rain, sleet
Winter is back, Kansas City.
After a week of sunshine and highs near or above 50 degrees, a winter storm warning goes into effect later on Friday, according to Fox4 meteorologist Karli Ritter.
There is also a chance of snow on Sunday when the Kansas City Chiefs take on the Houston Texans, said Ritter, who provides weather updates for The Star.
According to the National Weather Service, showers and isolated thunderstorms began to move into southern Kansas City Friday morning. People in the area could see heavy rain and pea-sized hail.
The weather service says 4 to 6 inches of snow and sleet are possible — plus 0.15 inch of ice.
BEHIND THE STORY
MOREHow we did this story
The Star produced this weather update in partnership with the local FOX4 television station. The station’s meteorologists create forecast videos multiple times a day for the newspaper to include in its weather reports.
Ritter said the rain and sleet will move in Friday evening throughout the night.
“This is the problematic part of the forecast,” Ritter said, “that will include the potential for freezing rain and sleet to accumulate all the way through tomorrow morning,” Ritter said.
On Saturday, the precipitation will transition to snow by mid-morning, Ritter said, and should quickly begin to pile up.
The winter storm comes after several days of warm weather, including a high of 66 degrees at the Kansas City International Airport. According to the weather service, that broke the previous record high of 64 on Jan. 9, 1902.
