3 inches of snow and counting as National Weather Service’s Key West office trolls KC

A winter storm moving through the Kansas City region dumped several inches of snow by noon Sunday, according to the National Weather Service in Pleasant Hill.

“Just took our official noon observation and we had 3.0 inches here,” the weather service said on Twitter.

The tweet prompted the National Weather Service in Key West, Florida, to respond: “We also took our official 1 p.m. observation and it is sunny with a temp of 75F and no precipitation in sight! ;)“

If that bit of mischief wasn’t enough for Kansas Citians, the metro area likely will see the snow intensify throughout the afternoon.

“We are still expecting periods of moderate to heavy snow through the afternoon before coming to an end around 7 p.m. - 8 p.m.,” the weather service said.

Between 4 and 6 inches of snow was expected to fall in the area Sunday, with some areas seeing higher amounts. A second round of light snow is expected to bring another 1 to 2 inches of snow by Monday.

FOX4 meteorologist Garry Frank said on Twitter that 4 inches of snow had fallen in Independence by noon.

The National Weather Service in Topeka asked people to tweet out snow reports, including time and location. The responses ranged from 3 inches in Topeka to 5 inches in Manhattan, Kansas.
