Crash on westbound I-435 in Johnson County snarls morning rush hour traffic

A pre-dawn crash along westbound Interstate 435 in Overland Park has forced the closure of the highway, leading to a large backup during the morning’s rush hour on Wednesday.

The highway closed near the Overland Park/U.S. 69 shortly before 3 a.m., according to the Kansas City Scout, the area’s bi-state traffic management system. Traffic was being routed around the crash using the ramp to Quivira Road.

Officers were working a serious injury crash, Overland Park police said on X about 4:45 a.m. Police urged rush hour drivers to use an alternate route as emergency crews were on scene. Further details were not immediately available.

The closure was causing traffic to back up beyond Antioch Road, with traffic slowing just after Metcalf Avenue.
