An early morning crash involving a cattle truck forced a major highway into downtown Kansas City to shut down for several hours, snarling traffic in Thursday morning’s rush hour, a police spokeswoman said.

All lanes of the highway have since reopened and the crash was cleared shortly before 9 a.m., according to Kansas City Scout.

The crash occurred shortly before 1:45 a.m. along the southbound lanes of Interstate 29/35 near Front Street, which is just past the Bond Bridge, said Officer Alayna Gonzalez with the Kansas City Police Department.

While the highway was shut down, police diverted drivers onto Berkley Parkway/Front Street immediately after they crossed the Bond Bridge, Kansas City Scout traffic cameras showed.

Traffic along the highway, which is one of three major routes drivers take to get into downtown, was backed up beyond Armour Road in North Kansas City.

A preliminary investigation revealed that an SUV and a semi-truck loaded with cattle crashed at Front Street and Interstate 29/35, Gonzalez said.

Neither of the drivers were injured, however, several of the animals were killed and injured. The highway remained closed for most of the morning’s rush hour while the surviving animals were loaded onto another cattle trailer, she said.
