A portion of Interstate 35 in Kansas City’s Northland shut down after a dump truck involved in a multi-vehicle crash spilled its load of asphalt across all lanes of the highway during the Wednesday morning rush hour.

The southbound lanes of the highway, which is a major connector for the eastern part of the Northland into downtown Kansas City and other parts of the metro, shut down shortly before 8 a.m. between North Brighton Avenue and North Choutgeau Trafficway, according to Kansas City Scout.

Traffic cameras showed asphalt from the truck covered all lanes of southbound I-35. Traffic was backed up along the highway to Missouri 152/West Kansas Street in the Liberty and Kansas City, North, area.

Meanwhile, traffic on southbound I-35 near the crash was forced to turn around and exit the highway on the ramp from Northeast Winn Road to southbound I-35, traffic cameras showed.

Further details on the crash were not immediately available.
