When will I receive my Missouri tax refund? Here’s how to avoid delays
It’s now tax season in Missouri.
Jan. 26 is the start of the 2026 filing season. The IRS received close to 2.9 million tax returns from Missourians in 2022, the most recent year available.
Lower-income taxpayers are more likely to receive refunds than their higher earning counterparts, but high-income individuals get more money back when they do get refunds, according to a 2025 analysis by financial website Upgraded Points.
Nationwide, 77% of those earning less than $50,000 a year got money back, compared to 35% of those making over $200,000. But the bottom portion received an average refund of $2,403, while the top earners typically received $15,350.
Whether you have filed already or plan to wait, here is information on deadlines for the 2026 tax season.
When do I have to file my 2025 tax return?
In Missouri, the deadline to file your 2025 state and federal taxes is April 15.
If you need more time, you can submit paperwork to the IRS by Tax Day. This allows you a 6-month extension on filing for federal and state taxes. However, to avoid penalties on any payments, you’ll want to pay the first installment of your estimated 2026 tax owed.
When will I get my Missouri tax refund?
When you get your Missouri tax refund depends on when you file, according to H&R Block. Returns filed in January might be issued within a week, but those submitted in April might take longer to hit your bank account.
How can I check the status of my Missouri tax refund?
You can go online to track both your Missouri and federal tax refunds.
On the Missouri Department of Revenue website, go to the Missouri return tracker. The portal can tell you if your return was received, accepted as filed or adjusted, plus if the refund was sent.
Your return will show up on the tracker up to five business days after filing online or three to four weeks after mailing your return.
On the Missouri return tracker, you’ll submit information from your tax return:
- Social Security Number
- Filing status (single, married, etc.)
- Dollar amount of anticipated refund or balance due
- Tax year of the return
You’ll have the option to receive an email or text when your tax return status changes.
For federal taxes, go to the IRS’ Where’s My Refund? tool, which updates 24 hours after you file an online return.
