Man kills his roommate on their way to watch college football game, MO cops say
A man with “long build-up of frustration” against his roommate is accused of fatally shooting him along a Missouri street, authorities say.
Marvin Byrd and his roommate were on their way to a college football watch party in St. Louis on Sept. 6, when Byrd became mad at the roommate “for perceived lack of financial contribution to the household,” according a probable cause statement.
Byrd then shot the unnamed victim in a street before dropping his gun and sitting in his car until officers arrived, police said.
Investigators said the victim was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to KSDK.
Interviewed by police, the 54-year-old accused shooter said his roommate was acting “reckless,” and Byrd initially said the roommate had charged at him, according to the court documents.
But he changed his story, later telling investigators the shooting was an “accident,” and caused by “a long build-up of frustration” with his roommate, authorities said.
Police said Byrd was seen by a witness holding the gun while the roommate was on the ground. The aftermath of the shooting was also captured by doorbell surveillance footage.
Byrd was charged with first-degree murder, armed criminal action, unlawful possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and resisting arrest, according to the court records.
He remains jailed in St. Louis as of Sept. 8, jail records show.
