Powerball player wins $150,000 in Missouri as jackpot hits $1.3 billion
A Powerball ticket sold in Missouri won $150,000, just missing the $1.2 billion jackpot, lottery officials say.
The ticket matched four winning numbers. the Powerball and the Power Play in the drawing Monday, Sept. 1, the Missouri Lottery said.
The lucky ticket was sold at Star Liquor & Tobacco in Excelsior Springs, which is about a 30-mile drive northeast from Kansas City.
Tickets sold in Montana and North Carolina matched five winning numbers and the Power Play multiplier but not the Powerball to win $2 million each in the drawing, the national Powerball site said.
Tickets sold in Florida, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Virginia also matched five winning numbers but not the Powerball to win $1 million each.
A player in California, which adjusts lottery prize amounts based on the number of tickets sold and number of winners, won $1.3 million, the California Lottery said.
One hundred twenty-four players across the U.S. matched four numbers drawn and the Powerball to win $50,000, and another 25 added the Power Play multiplier to win $150,000.
The winning numbers were 8, 23, 25, 40 and 53 with a Powerball of 5. The Power Play multiplier was 3x.
Powerball jackpot rises
Nobody won the grand prize, which rises to an estimated $1.3 billion, with a cash value of about $589 million, for the next drawing Wednesday, Sept. 3, the national Powerball site said.
More than 4.5 million other Powerball tickets sold in the United States also won prizes ranging from $4 to $150,000, the lottery said.
The Powerball jackpot was last won May 31, when a California player hit the $204.5 million grand prize.
What to know about Powerball
To score a jackpot in the Powerball, a player must match all five white balls and the red Powerball.
The odds of scoring the jackpot prize are 1 in 292,201,338.
Tickets can be bought on the day of the drawing, but sales times and price vary by state.
Drawings are broadcast Saturdays, Mondays and Wednesdays at 10:59 p.m. ET and can be streamed online.
Powerball is played in 45 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
