If you find yourself on a road trip through Kansas or Missouri this year, odds are you will be looking for somewhere to eat along the way.
Fast food options will always be there if you’re in a rush, but if you have time to sit down in a new town, there are plenty of local restaurants scattered in the Midwest, many for cheap.
Finance website CashNetUSA found the top-rated low-cost restaurants in every state and 15 major cities in the United States after ranking budget-friendly eateries by their five-star rating on Yelp in over 500 cities. The study uses data collected through May
Two of the top restaurants in the country for cheap and good food lie in southern Missouri. In fact, they’re just a block apart.
Barbecue restaurant Oscar’s Famous Ribs and Asian restaurant Carly’s Healthy Cuisine, both in Branson, were tied for second in CashNetUSA’s national ranking. The barbecue restaurant sits at 302 Veterans Boulevard, and the Asian restaurant is at 215 W. Atlantic St., only a three-minute walk in between them.
Both have an average Yelp rating of 4.95 out of 5 stars. Carly’s received its rating for its lengthy happy hours for drinks from 2 to 5 p.m. every day except Tuesday, when it’s closed.
“This is a small restaurant (maybe 10 tables/booths of varying sizes) that serves Chinese noodle soups made to order, as well as a handful of sandwiches and sides,” A Yelp review said. “Although the soups were chock-full of ingredients and came in large bowls, they did not make anyone feel stuffed, it was just right.”
Oscar’s menu includes a pulled pork sandwich and a BBQ chicken sandwich for $7 each. Carly’s menu has $12.99 noodle stir-fry and noodle soups, where guests can pick their ingredients.

The best restaurant for cheap eats in Kansas is Sandwich Bowl, 4821 W. 6th St. in Lawrence. The restaurant has a Yelp rating of 4.80., with sandwich ranging from $10-15.
Lola’s Kitchen in Hampton, New Hampshire, is the best cheap eating spot, with an average rating of 4.97 stars. Pummarola, a pizza place in Miami Beach, Florida, also had an average rating of 4.95.
