A 5-year-old boy died Sunday, April 16, in an accident involving a John Deere tractor, Missouri police say.

Missouri State Highway Patrol said the incident happened around 1 p.m. in Lincoln County when a 59-year-old man was operating the tractor on a gravel road through private property. Lincoln County is a northwest suburb of St. Louis.

The tractor door was ajar, causing the 5-year-old passenger to be ejected from it, according to highway patrol. He was then run over.

The boy, from St. Charles, was pronounced dead about 20 minutes later, police said.

Troopers say the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office assisted in the investigation.
