The richest Kansas and Missouri counties likely won’t surprise. How do they compare?

The richest counties in Kansas and Missouri probably won’t surprise longtime residents, according to a new study.

But how do they stack up against each other?

A study by 24/7 Wall St. based on U.S. Census Bureau data analyzed more than 2,000 counties across the country to get the answers.

In Kansas, the wealthiest is Johnson County in suburban Kansas City, according to the study. For Missouri, it’s St. Charles County just northwest of St. Louis.

Johnson County income statistics

The average household earns $84,915 in Johnson County, compared to about $57,000 for the state.

Meanwhile, the poverty rate is also considerably lower than the state average at 5.6 percent, compared to 12.4 percent for Kansas. Unemployment was 2.5 percent in October.

Over half of adults in the county had a bachelor’s degree at 55 percent.

St. Charles County income statistics

In St. Charles County, the average household earned $81,411, compared to about $53,000 for the average Missouri family.

The poverty rate mirrored Johnson County at 5.6 percent, compared to 14.2 percent for the state.

Far fewer adults have bachelor’s degrees in St. Charles County compared to Johnson County, with about 38 percent completing a college degree, according to the study. About 29 percent of adults in Missouri have their bachelor’s degree.
