Two forced to swim to safety after flash flood in Missouri

MILLERSVILLE, Mo. – Two people are recovering after a pickup truck was swept away in a flash flood in southeast Missouri, forcing them to swim to safety.

The Southeast Missourian reports that heavy rain caused a creek near Millersville to swell Thursday morning. Authorities say a man tried to drive over a bridge when fast-moving water swept the vehicle off the bridge. The truck ended up hundreds of yards downstream and covered to the windshield in water.

The driver and a passenger got out and swam to a gravel bar. The driver was arrested for a revoked license.

The storm that began Wednesday dumped hail and heavy rain in parts of Missouri, causing several waterways to rise.
