Kansas girl is hit by car while helping turtle in road

A 17-year-old Lawrence girl remained hospitalized Friday with serious injuries after she was hit by a car Thursday while trying to help a turtle get off a road.

The accident occurred about 5:30 p.m. southeast of Lawrence, according to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office. Emergency medical workers transferred the girl, identified as Mersadie L. Walker, by helicopter to Overland Park Regional Medical Center, where she remained in serious condition Friday.

Lawrence resident Elisabeth L. Mason was arrested and charged with driving with a suspended license and having no proof of insurance. She has been released on bond. Her first court appearance has been scheduled for July 3.
